Es geht fast unter, aber auch die Amerikaner haben eine Art Griechenland: Puerto Rico. Das Land ist kein Bundesstaat der USA, sondern ein Außengebiet mit Selbstverwaltung. Die 3,6 Millionen Puerto Ricaner sind amerikanische Staatsbürger, dürfen aber nicht den US-Präsidenten wählen. Insgesamt hat Puerto Rico 73 Milliarden Dollar Schulden.
In einem Interview mit der „New York Times“hat nun der Gouverneur Puerto Ricos, Alejandro García Padilla, klar gemacht: „Die Schulden können nicht bezahlt werden“.
“The debt is not payable. There is no other option. I would love to have an easier option. This is not politics, this is math.”
Sein Land, so Padilla, sei in einer Todesspirale gefangen („death spiral“). Daher brauche das Land einen Schuldenschnitt, und dafür müssten auch die Gläubiger Opfer bringen:
“If they don’t come to the table, it will be bad for them. What will happen is that our economy will get into a worse situation and we’ll have less money to pay them. They will be shooting themselves in the foot.”
